The village of Upton Cross on the eastern edge of Bodmin Moor gives access to the charm and beauty of the moorland. The village is host to the homely Caradon Inn and to the open-air Sterts Theatre with its interesting programme of events and plays. Rising to Caradon Hill, there are spectacular long distance views. Visitors are drawn to the moor for the drama of its landscape, the richness of its prehistoric monuments and to learn about its industrial heritage.
The outlook from Jupiter Lodge is a panoramic open view southeast towards Kit Hill with Dartmoor in the distance, and Caradon Hill can be seen through the trees to the southwest. Local footpaths include walks along the banks of the River Lynher as it runs through the pretty Stara Woods. It is a 10 minute walk to open moorland and is an ideal location for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. Upton Cross is just over a mile from the lodge, as is the village of Rilla Mill.

Fishing in Lakes & Reservoirs

Bodmin Moor is home to several stunning lakes. Colliford Lake is a renowned destination for brown and rainbow trout, with the occasional salmon providing thrilling catches. Smaller reservoirs like Crowdy offer great brown trout. Siblyback Lake, known for its beautiful setting, is an excellent choice for fly fishing stocked rainbow and brown trout. For those seeking diverse coarse fish, Lower Tamar Lake offers carp, roach, bream, and perch, alongside the possibility of trout.

Rivers of Legend

The River Camel, flowing through the region, is beloved by salmon and sea trout anglers. However, much is managed by clubs and associations, so planning in advance is essential. The River Fowey also provides opportunities for sea trout and salmon, with designated fishing zones in place. For a touch of mystery, Dozmary Pool, steeped in Arthurian legend, offers limited opportunities due to its protected status.

The Manor Inn in Rilla Mill  is a little over a mile from Jupiter Lodge. This is a friendly pub serving good pub food. It is generally best to book a table at weekends. It is an easy walk from the lodge along a minor lane to Rilla Mill. We always have a walk down there when we are staying at the lodge!

The Caradon Inn  is a similar distance in a different direction but not really walkable as the road is a little busier and there is no pavement – it is however an easy drive. It is opposite the Sterts Theatre in Upton Cross. Again, it is a friendly pub serving very good food on Fridays and Saturdays. As food is not served every day so best to check opening times.

The pub also has a village shop which can be very useful.

The Racehorse Inn has now been reopened and renamed as The Old School Inn in the village of North Hill which is some 2.5 miles from the lodge. Might be worth a visit.

The Crows Nest Inn in the little village of Crows Nest is 4.4 miles from the lodge. We have enjoyed some good meals there!

The Wheal Tor Hotel and Restaurant  is 3.2 miles from the lodge near the village of Pensilva up on the moor. We think it is more expensive but we have never been there so cannot comment.

There are of course good restaurants and pubs in Liskeard and Launceston being towns, but personally we like the country pubs!

This picturesque reservoir offers stunning views, outdoor activities, and a serene escape. Jupiter Lodge, a luxurious holiday cottage nearby, is the perfect base for your visit.

Jupiter Lodge is the perfect base for your visit. It comfortably sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms and is located just 6.5 miles from the lodge. This makes it ideal for exploring both the lake and the surrounding Bodmin Moor.
